What is an Armature?

An armature is a structure that helps to support a sculpture from the inside.

Mostly made from wire or welded mild steel it is made to carry the weight of the clay or wax that will be sculpted around it.

In this case the soft aluminium wire allows for the sculptor to change their mind and adjust the pose as they work.

It is really only suitable to add plasticine, or oil-based clay or polymer clays to this armature as they do not shrink and allow the sculptor time to add a lot of detail.

is only 1/4 of an average human figure in length, but volumetrically it would read as 1/8 of the figure .
